Many of the most unpleasant aspects of urban life are caused by cars, for both driver and the city itself. Large sweltering expanses of tarmac in cities contribute heavily to the urban heat island effect, whilst cars also become unbearably hot in summer sitting in these urban deserts.

Optimizing the heliostatic photovoltaic panels ultimately resulted in their leaflike shape. Although never intentionally conceived to mimic the form of a tree, the panels rotate to follow the path of the sun throughout the day – much like sunflowers – absorbing light whilst also providing optimal shading for cars. Although all parked cars can benefit from shading, electric vehicles can directly charge their batteries by plugging into the ‘solar trees.’

Solar Tree is unique among anti-auto pollution designs in that it empathizes with the anthropomorphized automobile, but particularly with the electric car, providing a place for overworked, spent cars to regain their lost torque, to relax beneath the trees, to gain back their juice in an optimal stress-free environment.

Great concept Neville, and definitely an eye catching illustration - great job in making the point.

However...,  I'm personally convinced that humans need a mother-earth natural look for piece of mind.  Point in case : Grey plastic furniture in our homes or would most of us prefer the natural warm textures of textiles and carpets, leather and wood.?  (clue : Step into 99.9/100 furniture stores and you'll see what is being bought).

The fact of the matter is that most of us get agitated and down-hearted in concrete (or plastic & steel) jungles. There's something primitive deep within our make up that either dies or rebels. Barely perceptibly at first but it is happening. Think urban development estates and how they are almost always trashed. That is no coincidence.

Might I suggest then : Solar panels need not be flat, nor continuous ...as any leaf will tell you ;)  so a solar array might be more like a net, where blue skies can be seen through.  And such a net might equally be supporting a beautiful vine or creeping flower (fragrance is equally important even to us men..!) where the plant life also oxygenates the air.  Imagine then a pergola, a solar canopy where man's needs and plant life are intertwined, where you can hear the bird's sing as you walk to and from your car.    And even the office workers who look down on it will be happier

Perhaps you might illustrate that for us ?  .. the artistic challenge will be to make it anywhere as near eye-catching !
